I know that many of you are very anxious to know when you will receive your medical cannabis card…and who wouldn’t be? After you hit the button to submit it via their website or mail it off to the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH), the estimated processing time is currently 40-45 days. Unfortunately, there is no tracking system for medical cannabis applications. We all know that the lack of a state budget for a year has wreaked havoc on many agencies. Please be mindful that these people are overworked and understaffed, doing the best they can.
Sometime around 45 days after submission, your card will either turn up in your mailbox or you will get a letter or email letting you know there is a problem with your application. If neither of these things happens, and make sure you wait the 45 days or they will tell you to check back after 45 days, you can send an email to the IDPH as follows:
Subject Line: Status Inquiry for (insert your own first and last name and date of birth)
Body of email to IDPH as follows:
To Whom It May Concern:
I am inquiring on the status of my application submitted on or around (insert date of application). I can be reached at (your email address and telephone number).
Patient Name (insert your name or name of patient
you are inquiring about)
Typically, the IDPH has been very good with a 3 to 5 day response time. All status inquiries have been requested to be submitted in writing, so no telephone calls, please.
I’ll like to give a shout out to Dr. Rahul Khare at Innovative Express Care, who supplied this very valuable information! He is a very active member of the Illinois cannabis community and regularly answers questions posed by patients and prospective patients on the Illinois Medical Cannabis Community (IMCC) Facebook page. We need many more doctors like Dr. Khare!
